18 year old gangraped, burnt alive in Bengal, FB post confusing investigation

Barely after a week, a minor girl was raped and killed in Kultuli in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, another gangrape of a teenager in the state has raised questions on the safety and security of women.

On Wednesday, an 18-year-old woman was found dead with burn marks on her body in Krishnanagar town of Nadia district, hours after she had left home, saying she was going out to have pizza.

A post appeared on the the girl’s Facebook stating, “No one is responsible for my death,” an hour before her body was recovered has confused the investigating agencies.

The family alleged that she was gang raped and killed. Based on a complaint lodged by the woman’s family, an 18-year-old man was arrested. Police said they are also questioning his family members. The family alleged that the fiancé initially ignored their call and later claimed the girl was sleeping. She said the boy abused them.

Superintendent of Police (Krishnanagar) Amarnath K said, “The arrests have been made based on the complaint lodged by the woman’s parents. We are not sure if the woman died at the spot, where her body was found.” However, the police said that there were no sign of a fire at that place.

“Only a postmortem examination can determine the cause of death and whether she was raped. We are also examining the cameras installed in that area is being examined,” said SP.

The issue has raised controversy in the state with opposition questioning the safety and security of women in the state. However, not a word has come from always vocal trinamool MP from Krishnanagar Mohua Moitra. She did not find time to visit the victim’s house till now.
