New Delhi: Shahi Imam Syed Ahmed Bukhari announced his son, Syed Usama Shaban Bukhari as his successor during the solemn ‘dastarbandi’ ceremony passing on the mantle of responsibility in a tradition-rich ritual at the mosque’s courtyard in a momentous event held at the revered Jama Masjid in Delhi.

The ceremony amidst the auspicious occasion of Shab-e-Barat graced by dignitaries from across the nation and abroad, marked a pivotal moment in the legacy of the Jama Masjid. Notably, Syed Ahmed Bukhari formally declared his son as the Naib Imam in November 2014, sparking intense debates and discussions.

However, in this solemn ‘dastarbandi’ ceremony, amidst the gathering of religious scholars, Syed Ahmed Bukhari ceremoniously bestowed the turban upon his son, officially anointing him as the Imam.

While the incumbent Imam will continue to carry out his duties, Syed Usama Shaban Bukhari stands ready to assume responsibilities should circumstances necessitate.

This tradition of succession announcement by the Shahi Imam during their lifetime has been observed since the Mughal era. As preparations for the ceremony have been underway at the Jama Masjid for several days, the atmosphere resembled that of adorning a bride, with both local and international guests expected to grace the occasion.

With the ‘dastarbandi,’ Syed Usama Shaban Bukhari is primed to step into the role of the Shahi Imam. Amidst the ceremonial rituals, the Shahi Imam himself adorned his son with the turban, symbolizing the transition of authority.

Syed Usama Shaban Bukhari has diligently immersed himself in religious studies, seeking knowledge both locally and abroad.
