CHANDIGARH: Amidst the political row in Punjab, Gangster turned social activist Lakhbir Singh who was one of the prime accused in the violence in Delhi during a farmer’s rally on Republic Day in 2021, was on Sunday declared as Punjab’s Bathinda Parliamentary seat as Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar (SAD-A) candidate.
Spearheading this decision, SAD-A President Simranjit Singh Mann underscores Sidhana’s dedication to the betterment of Punjab, particularly his unwavering commitment to the preservation of Punjabi culture and advocacy for various social causes.
“I extend my heartfelt wishes to Lakha Singh Sidhana and hold firm belief that Bathinda will choose their homegrown advocate for positive change, thereby amplifying the voice of Punjab’s community,” expressed Mann, who himself represents Sangrur in the parliamentary sphere.
Hailed from Sidhana village in Bathinda district, Sidhana’s journey unfolds against the backdrop of the farmers’ agitation, where he had emerged as a prominent figure championing the cause. Despite facing allegations of incitement during the unrest at the Red Fort, Sidhana’s aspirations towards political engagement remained steadfast.
When he was named for inciting violence at the Red Fort, farmer’s leaders had distanced themselves from Sidhana and blamed him for it.
Transitioning from a checkered past as a minor figure in local gangs to a vocal proponent of societal reform, Sidhana’s narrative reflects a transformational arc. His foray into politics dates back to the 2012 Assembly polls, where he contested under the banner of the People’s Party of Punjab. Notably, he also affiliated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in earlier years.
Behind the headlines, Sidhana’s recent prominence stems from his advocacy for the primacy of Punjabi in official communication—a stance resonating deeply within Punjab’s cultural fabric.
In a state often defined by its rich history and dynamic politics, Sidhana’s trajectory serves as a poignant reminder of the power of redemption and the potential for individuals to evolve beyond their past.
