Communal tensions broke out in the Mahasi township of Bahraich district of central Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, after a man was killed during the clash between the devotees going to immerse Durga idol. According to sources, unrest broke out after an altercation took place between the members of the two communities when they came face-to-face over DJ music. The news of death had spread like wild fire in the area. The incident led to protest in the area that took shape of a communal unrest later in the night.
Altercation between two communities erupted when the members of the minority community objected to the music being played in the immersion procession taking the idol for immersion. This led to a big altercation between the two groups. Clashes took place when the members of the minority community resorted first to stone pelting followed by firing. The incident took place in Mahsi Maharajganj area under the Hardi police station of Bahraich.

The deceased was identified as Ramgopal Mishra (22), resident of Mansoor village. Mishra who succumbed during the treatment at Medical College, had had got married just four months back. Another resident Rajan (30) of the same village also sustained a bullet injury. Many more received serious injury.
The immersion of Durga idol from neighbouring areas – Fakharpur, Ramgaon, and Kaisarganj, were suspended following the massive demonstration by the family of the deceased and local residents.
Security have been beefed up. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held emergency meeting with senior cops and ordered them to identify the elements who vitiated the festive atmosphere. Adityanath, warned strict action against the guilty.
