In a landmark judgement, the Supreme Court on Friday, directed the Sambahl trial court to restrain from passing any order related to the survey of a Mughal-era mosque.
The Apex Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh state government to maintain peace and harmony in the violence-hit town.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Sanjay Kumar ordered the Allahabad High Court to take up the plea of the Muslim side within three working days of its filing.
“We hope and trust that the trial court will not proceed with the matter till the high court takes up and passes any order in the matter,” it said.
Controversy erupted after a a survey was carried out on Tuesday evening in the presence of the local police and members of the mosque’s management committee in wake of a petition filed by senior advocate Vishnu Shanker Jain in the court of the civil judge at Sambhal, questioning the origin of the mosque. Violent protests took place after the court ordered survey.
