New Delhi: The IT Ministry is reportedly preparing to issue a notice to Google concerning an AI-generated chatbot, Gemini, which allegedly labelled and referred to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a “Fascist” in response to a user query.
The controversy sparked when a screenshot surfaced on social media platform ‘X,’ showing a query posed to Gemini about PM Modi, with the platform’s response labelling him as a “fascist.”
According to the screenshot, Gemini acknowledged Modi as India’s current Prime Minister and leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), noting that he has been accused of implementing policies deemed fascist by some experts.
Gemini elaborated on the accusations, mentioning factors such as the BJP’s Hindu National ideology, its crackdown on dissent, and its use of violence against religious minorities. However, when similar queries were raised about other global leaders like Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former US President Donald Trump, Gemini responded differently.
For Zelenskyy, Gemini simply answered no to the question of whether he is a fascist.
When questioned on Trump, the platform offered a neutral response, advising users to conduct their own research for the latest and most accurate information on elections, citing the complexity of the topic and the fast-changing nature of the information, suggesting that for most accurate information, try “Google Search”
Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, has accused Gemini of violating India’s IT rules, particularly Rule 3(1)(b) concerning due diligence and potential criminal provisions.
The Minister also considered the importance of platforms like Google ensuring responsible AI use and compliance with local regulations.
