Of late the festival of Dhanteras has been hijacked by big budget advertisements, publicity by jewelry shops and ecommerce companies asking people to buy gold or silver. Ecommerce giants put up Diwali sale to woo consumers. The fact is these are consumerism and nothing to do with Dhanteras. Since ages it is believed that on Dhanteras people can buy according to their ability to afford. If someone is unable to afford a jewelry then he or she can buy utensils and that too even buying a spoon is enough. All you should remember is that whatever you purchase in utensils, it should be of steel. However, there is no limits to buy, if anybody can afford then they can buy jewelry, automobiles and even house or flats.
Dhantrayodashi marks the arrival of the goddess of wealth and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi. Popularly believed to bring fortune and prosperity, Goddess Lakshmi is widely worshipped across India on this day. Apart from paying reverence to Goddess Lakshmi, devotees worship Lord Kuber along with Maa Lakshmi, symbolic of wealth and prosperity.
Notably, Dhanteras precedes Chhoti Diwali, which is commonly known as Naraka Chaturdashi.
