World marathon record holder dies in car crash

Kenya: Fans were left stunned and struggling to come out of the tragic news of the death of World marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum in a road accident, as they paid tributes on various social media platforms.

The 24-year-old, Kiptum, reportedly lost control of his vehicle while driving in Kaptagat, according to police investigations. His speeding vehicle veered off the road, colliding with a tree before landing in a ditch.

Kiptum’s remarkable achievements included winning the London Marathon in April and setting the world record in Chicago in October.

Tragically, his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also lost his life in the accident, while a third individual sustained severe injuries and was hospitalized.

“Devastatingly sickening! Kenya has lost a special gem. Lost for words,” lamented Ababu Namwamba, Kenya’s minister for sports, in a post on X.

Among those expressing their condolences, Sebastian Coe, President of World Athletics, conveyed deep sadness and disbelief over the loss of Kiptum and Hakizimana.

“An incredible athlete leaving an incredible legacy. We will miss him dearly,” Coe remarked, echoing the sentiments of many mourning the loss of the talented athlete.
