G20 Summit: PM Modi arrives in Brazil, meets world leaders including Biden

In last year’s New Delhi Summit, India had raised the critical issue of hunger and poverty along with reform of global governance institutions, which broadly align with key priorities under the Brazilian presidency. India also envisioned the Empowerment of Women Working Group that was convened for the first time earlier this year to fuel women-led development in the G20.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Brazil early on Monday to participate in the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro scheduled on November 18 and 19, 2024. PM Modi’s third visit to Brazil after the BRICS Summits in 2014 and 2019.

This year’s theme for the G20 Summit is ‘Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet’ where Brazil would prioritise the issues of social inclusion, poverty, sustainable development and reform of global governance institutions.

Prime Minister Modi met several world leaders, including outgoing US President Joe Biden. PM Modi had talks with Brazilian President Lula da Silva and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, ahead of the high-profile G20 Summit.

PM Modi was also seen shaking hands with Joe Biden before they took their seats with Chinese President Xi Jinping present there.

The points broadly align with key priorities under the Brazilian presidency.
