Memories! Ratan Tata – At a glance

Ratan Tata is no more. Known for his charity and other philanthropy work, he is being remembered by all. There are many businessmen in India but perhaps nobody can touch the humane perspective of Ratan Tata.

Let’s take a glance at some of the interesting aspects of his life:

1) Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, in a distinguished Parsi family. He faced personal challenges early on, including his parents’ separation, but his grandmother, Navajbai Tata, played a pivotal role in his upbringing.

2) He received his education at prestigious Cornell University and Harvard Business School.

3) Ratan Tata made his entry into the Tata Group in 1961. He began on the shop floor of Tata Steel. The hands-on experience helped him to understand the people powered India’s industrial growth.

4) Ratan Tata led the Tata Group from 1991 to 2012.  

5) He took over as Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991, succeeding JRD Tata. The Tata Group was largely an Indian conglomerate with annual revenues of around $5 billion.

6) The Tata Group expanded to over $100 billion in revenue by the time he retired in 2012. The Group expanded its operations across over 100 countries having a strong presence in industries, ranging from steel and automobiles to IT services and consumer goods.

7) Ratan Tata had promised to roll out affordable car for the middle class which he did by manufacturing the Nano cars. Intially, Tatas planned to manufacture at Singur in West Bengal but due to unprofessional attitude of state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Ratan Tata shifted Nano factory to Gujarat after Narendra Modi offered him land and other facilities.
