NEW DELHI: The rules for implementing the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) were notified by the Union Home Ministry on Monday.
The law and enforcement agencies also beefed up the security in Delhi, North East and major parts of the country to avoid untoward incidents.
After the notification, the government will now grant Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, who had come to India before December 2014.
The officials said these include Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Paris and Christians. India will give them citizenship on humanitarian grounds.
The CAA was passed in December 2019 and subsequently got the President’s assent.

“Of course, the law is good and for the welfare of the society but distrust of the government was so high last time that a section of people felt that this law was brought to snatch their citizenships of India and throw them out of the country,” A Senior officer said to News Cliff.
Giving his statement on CAA, All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali said,”We have come to know that this notification has been issued and my appeal to all the community members is that we all should maintain peace and our legal committee will study the full notification and then any statement can be given”
While reactions come on social media platform ‘X’ from overseas, Hollywood singer, Mary Millben appreciated the new law introduced in India.
“This is a pathway towards peace. This is a true act of democracy.” As a Christian, woman of faith and global advocate for religious freedom, I applaud the Modi-led government announcing today the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act now granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.
Thank you PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and the Indian Government for your compassionate leadership and most importantly for upholding religious freedom in welcoming those persecuted,” she said.
There were protests and agitations in the areas of Delhi NCR such as Shaheen Bagh in 2019-2020 led to riots in North East Delhi.
