Navalny’s death brings more US aid to Ukraine : President Joe Biden

Biden on Navalny death

Washington: Accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of being responsible for the death of Russian anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, President Joe Biden emphasized the urgent need for Congress to approve tens of billions of dollars in aid for Ukraine to deter Moscow’s potential invasion.

Speaking at the White House, Biden asserted that regardless of the cause, Navalny’s death places blame on Vladimir Putin. He expressed hope that this tragedy would compel US lawmakers to provide increased aid to Ukraine, stressing that history would judge their actions. Biden urged prompt action, highlighting reports of Ukrainian troops facing shortages of critical munitions on the battlefield.

Failure to support Ukraine during this crucial period, Biden warned, would have lasting consequences. He criticized House Republicans for allowing a two-week recess without addressing Ukraine funding, questioning their priorities and commitment to being responsible allies. Democrats, meanwhile, condemned pro-Putin elements within the Republican Party, accusing them of obstructing bipartisan national security efforts.

A recently released video showed Navalny appearing well and cheerful during testimony via videolink the day before his death. The Russian prison service stated that Navalny collapsed and lost consciousness at the penal colony where he was serving a jail term.

North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis, among the Republicans who supported the Senate-passed Ukraine aid package, honored Navalny’s sacrifice and condemned Putin as a murderous dictator. Tillis warned against apologizing for Putin or praising Russian autocracy, highlighting the importance of standing against tyranny.
