Washington: US President Joe Biden’s German Shepherd dog, named ‘Commander’ according to agency records, has reportedly bitten his security agents on at least 24 occasions within the confines of the White House. The extent of the attacks may exceed initial reports, as revealed by internal documents.
The attacks, documented between October 2022 and July 2023, ranged from minor incidents to more serious injuries to the Secret Service agents who protect President Biden at the White House. Although they are equipped with all manner of firearms and communication devices and experts in hand-to-hand combatting skills, one of the security agents required stitches after being bitten on the forearm, while another suffered a severe wound on the hand, requiring six stitches.
Commander displayed aggressive behavior whenever individuals approached the US President, often lunging to grab the legs, wrists, forehead, chest, and hands of security agents. Following an incident where a female officer was badly injured and needed immediate medical attention, Commander was removed from the White House last October to mitigate potential chaos and ensure the safety of Presidential bodyguards.
Despite efforts including additional training, leashing, consultations with veterinarians, and working with animal behaviorists, the White House environment proved challenging for Commander to adapt to.
A senior agent noted that the frequent bites prompted the Secret Service to advise agents to maintain a significant distance from the dog, indicating a change in tactics. This warning was issued months before Commander’s removal from the White House.
Commander initially joined Biden’s family in December 2021 as a puppy. The documents detailing the incidents were obtained through Freedom of Information requests but are heavily redacted to safeguard the identities of Secret Service agents and maintain security protocols.

Interestingly, Commander is not the only Biden German Shepherd to exhibit aggressive behaviour, as a previous dog named Major was eventually relocated to live with friends in Delaware after displaying similar tendencies.
Why are German Shepherds often considered the most aggressive and dangerous breed among dogs?
According to canine experts, German Shepherds have high energy requirements, necessitating ample exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. They tend to be wary of social interactions with strangers, preferring the company of their masters and trainers. With strong protective instincts, they may exhibit territorial behavior and potential aggression if not adequately trained and socialized.
Failure to provide proper mental and physical stimulation can result in boredom or anxiety, leading to undesirable behaviours such as chewing, aggression, or excessive barking.
