Justice Khanna to take oath as CJI on Nov 11, Law Minister announces on X

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will become the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He was appointed as next CJI by President of India Droupadi Murmu. Outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud has recommended his name as his successor. Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 from the Delhi High Court.

Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal made the announcement on X.

“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President, after consultation with Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,” his post read. 

Justice Khanna will take oath of office on November 11, 2024, a day after CJI Chandrachud retires. He has served as the CJI since November 8, 2022.

Justice Khanna will hold the position for just over six months. He is due to retire on May 13, 2025.
