‘Driverless Train’ runs 80 km, averted major accident: Internet shocked

Punjab: A bizarre incident narrowly averted a major disaster as a 53-wagon diesel goods train sped without a driver for about 80 kilometres from Kathua in Jammu towards Hoshiyarpur district, shocking the internet. The train was at 100 Kilometres per hour (Kmph) speed when it grabbed the attention of travellers.

Captured on video by a passenger, the footage went viral on social media, showing the train passing through stations.

As per the preliminary information, a spokesperson of Northern Railway said that the goods train had stopped at the Kathua railway station in Jammu for a driver change and it seems that it began to roll down a slope gradient track.

Emergency brakes were applied to stop the train, preventing a potential catastrophe. Railways reported the incident occurred between 7.25 am and 9 am on February 25, initiating an inquiry to determine the cause.

Loaded with chipstones, the train was en route to Punjab from Jammu. Northern Railway spokesperson indicated the train had stopped at Kathua station for a driver change, suggesting it may have rolled down a slope gradient track accidentally.

Soon after the incident, funny and mixed comments bombardment were started on a post on ‘X’. One of the users posted, “Driver got off to drink tea, train left without him and travelled 84 kilometres. Someone posted Elon Musk invented driverless train for India”.
