TELANGANA: In a significant move inspired by European counterparts, Telangana Police has embarked on a pioneering initiative to combat the escalating threat of drones and to safeguard national security at sensitive border regions by enlisting the assistance of three trained eagles.
Drawing from successful practices in nations like the Netherlands and France, where eagles have been effectively employed to intercept enemy drones, Telangana Police has meticulously trained three eagles for three years for this specialised task.
In the recent demonstration held at the Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) in Moinabad, witnessed by Director General of Police (DGP) Ravi Gupta and senior IPS officers, the three trained eagles showcased their prowess by adeptly bringing down drones. This historic feat marks the first instance of any police force in India leveraging eagles for such operations, underscoring Telangana Police’s commitment to innovative and effective security solutions.
All three eagles will also assist with the security measures to tackle the rising menace of drones during VVIP visits and public gatherings.
Reports suggest that the Indian Army has previously employed trained kites to target enemy drones, further highlighting the evolving tactics in countering aerial threats.
The decision to deploy trained eagles comes amidst growing concerns over the misuse of drones, particularly along sensitive border regions.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has reported a significant uptick in incidents involving unmanned aerial vehicles smuggling arms, ammunition, and drugs across the India-Pakistan border since 2021, underscoring the urgent need for innovative countermeasures to safeguard national security.
With the successful demonstration of these avian interceptors, the stage is set for a paradigm shift in security protocols, reinforcing the importance of adaptive strategies in the face of evolving security challenges.
