Indian Youth Duped Into Fighting For Russian Army in Ukraine, Killed

NEW DELHI: A youth from Hyderabad who was duped into joining the Russian Army for fighting against Ukraine has been killed.

The Indian Embassy in Moscow on Wednesday confirmed the death of a 30-year-old man identified as Mohammed Asfan.

“We have learnt about the tragic death of Mohammed Asfan, an Indian national. We are in touch with family and Russian authorities. The mission will make efforts to send his mortal remains to India,” the Embassy said in a post on ‘X’.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two children. His family is not in a position to say anything now.

“Afsan used to work for a garment shop, was duped by a Dubai-based job agent. He and his two accomplices went to Moscow via Sharjah in November last year. They were promised logistics jobs in the Russian Army,” Mohammed Imran, one of the victim’s brothers said.

“The family was suspected of foul play when they could not be connected following which we approached the Prime Minister’s Office and Minister of External Affairs for immediate help and to bring back 12 Indians who were forced to fight on the frontlines border against Ukraine,” he added.
